Training is Underway

162

The Arctic Adventure expedition is basking in the heat of an unseasonably warm and sunny Svalbard – highs of 10 degrees! Making good use of the conditions, the YEs are being put through their expedition training. Everyone has been boat trained (see photo above, from 2008 Svalbard Summer expedition with not such nice weather!) and some YEs are currently up on the glacier going through their safety training, including mountaineering and ropes skills, and crevasse rescue. Everyone is reported to be fit and healthy and coping very well with the demands of the expedition.

With the YEs out and about, base camp manager Thea and chief leader Trevor are getting lots done at base camp. The fine glacier silt and grit is getting everywhere and causing trouble with some of the equipment, so they are working hard at making sure that the tent zips don’t clog up and everything is in fine BSES working order.

Hi There. Just wondered if you could give me any information on how far the team are from the latest polar bear attack

It was at Ekstremhuken, on the very north coast of Nordaustlandet, the most north-westerly bit of the archipelago. A long way off; and the bear is now very inactive. http://www.explorersweb.com has the full story.

Sorry, correction. Nordaustlandet is north-easterly. The attack was on the north-west bit of that. Long way from Sveabrean.

As far as I know there has not been a polar bear sighting by one of BSES’s summer Svalbard expeditions. As the archipelago experiences higher temperatures in the summer a lot of the ice and snow melts away and the polar bears stay further north. If they were to come across a bear, the expedition is well trained in bear defence. We have had sightings on our spring expeditions to Svalbard, and these have always been a pleasure rather than a danger.
Do contact the BSES office with any concerns, but all reports suggest that the expedition is going well and everyone is having an excellent time.
